Styling Bed Sizes
When it comes to achieving a balanced and inviting bedscape, one style does not necessarily suit every mattress size. Pillow and cushion configuration, deciding between a blanket or throw, or whether you should size up or down with your duvet are all common questions we hear. To help you find a look you'll love, we share some handy tips on choosing the right bedding and accessories for your double, queen, or king-size bed.

Twin/Full Bed
When dressing a Twin or Full, sizing up to a queen-size duvet is a great way to make the bed appear more generous and provide better coverage on all sides. Keep your accessories simple, layering a throw at the end for luxurious texture and added warmth when needed, as well as one or two scatter cushions for interest. Queen Bed
As the most common size, a queen bed can handle most pillow and accessories configurations with ease. Appropriate styling will come down to the bedroom space itself, so consider things like ceiling height or the width of a feature wall. Incorporating European pillows will help accentuate high ceilings, while standard pillows styled upright are best for a wider room. The most important aspect of styling a queen bed is duvet upsizing – a king duvet will provide far better coverage, enhancing both aesthetics and usability. An exception is where a low-profile bed base is used rather than an ensemble, in which case a queen duvet may be better, so be sure to measure how much side duvet drape you require.

King Bed/California King Bed
Often the most tricky size to style due to its width, there are a number of little hints that will help style king beds perfectly. As with a queen bed, upsizing your duvet to a California king size is a great option for providing additional drop and length and overall coverage. It’s not as essential as a queen bed, however, as king-size duvets are far more generous. End-of-bed styling is an important aspect, and opting for a blanket, bedspread or coverlet is a much better option rather than a throw. While a throw might look flimsy and can get lost over the great expanse of a king or California king bed, a blanket will give greater coverage either draped side-to-side or over the end. You can still use a throw as a finishing layer to elevate the look with colour and texture.
Flocca Linen Cushion in Moro, Flocca Linen Pillowcase in Russo, Double Linen Crush Throw in Moro/Floss, Flocca Linen Blanket in Russo
King pillows are an essential solution for creating balance and filling out width. These pillow inserts are not always easy to come by and certainly not always best for sleep needs, therefore this long profile pillow is best used decoratively at the back, against the wall or bedhead, with standard-size pillows in front. If your standard sleeping pillows are not particularly pretty, you can hide them behind the decorative king pillows, ready for bed, and style with two European pillows at the front. This will help to balance the elongation of the standard pillows with some height. Finish the look with a simple 50 x 50 cushion or our preferred choice, a luxurious body cushion.

A Tailored Approach
Pure linen bedding is known for its rumpled, textural feel and relaxed sensibility, however, it can also offer a more tailored look with the right styling. Taking a considered approach to colours, patterns, weight and layering, you can achieve neat sophistication while still enjoying the signature laidback ease and luxurious tactility that makes linen so appealing.
Flocca Linen Flat Sheet in Ayrton
Begin with a fresh linen flat sheet as a base, which provides an essential layer between harder-to-wash blankets and bedspreads. From here, add a light, patterned layer, or our sumptuous Flocca Linen Blanket, for texture and interest. A neat tuck or a flat layer pulled firmly across the bed helps to further create a classic, tailored feel.
Basix Linen Quilt in Ayrton, Double Linen Crush Throw in Kali/Petra
The top layer, whether it be a quilt, coverlet or light duvet, serves both a practical and decorative purpose, acting as a warm layer when needed or folded towards the end of the bed when not in use, while offering volume in all seasons. To complete the look, a texture-rich throw provides stylistic freedom and an elegant finishing touch.
Flocca Linen Euro Pillowcase in Armee, Flocca Linen Blanket in Elk, Basix Linen Pillowcase in Kali, Flocca Linen Pillowcase in Ayrton
Pillows should be simple yet stacked, with cushions in patterns or accent hues. Keep your colour scheme in the same family, as seen with the white freshness of Ayrton blended beautifully with warm, stone grey hues. This tonal palette lends a calm, cohesive look that provides an adaptable base for hints of rich colour or an understated stripe detail.

Katherine Harris of Coombs Hill Barn
Katherine Harris took a pared-back approach to styling her family property, an incredible 160-year-old barn in Victoria's High Country that won the title of Best Designed Stay at the 2022 Airbnb Host Awards, with thoughtfully chosen pieces that enhance its rustic beauty and echo the natural colours of the surrounding landscape. With a background in hotel and property management and her husband Wade's skills as a builder, Katherine has designed a luxurious and welcoming retreat that is both enjoyed by her family and shared with guests.
Was there a particular look you wanted to achieve at Coombs Hill Barn? Throughout the whole project, the most important thing was to keep the integrity of the historic timber. To us, the barn structure needed to be the star of the show. That meant that anything else we chose to add to the property needed to be almost understated and blend into the space so as to not outshine the barn wood post and beams. I don't know if we ever had a specific look or aesthetic we wanted to set out to achieve. As we chose items and pieces for the space, we just knew it all had to be tied back to the structure on show.

Did this approach differ when you considered the home as accommodation?
We never intended for Coombs Hill Barn to be an accommodation venue. It was a family property first and once completed we were overwhelmed with the kindness and support for the space from those who visited. We felt like this was a space we could share with others and hope they can also make life-long memories there. For this reason, everything that was chosen was actually chosen for the property because we love each item and it worked for our family.
What are some of the key touches that helped achieve a balance of luxury and comfort? With so much timber, stone and concrete, I knew we needed to add softness into the space and keep a neutral palette so as to not compete with the barn wood post and beams. We chose light linen sofas and armchairs, plush throws and cushions, lots of lamps for soft lighting and a light paint colour to even out the space.
Flocca Linen Duvet in Russo, Flocca Linen Blanket in Russo, Flocca Linen Pillowcase in Russo, Flocca Linen Cushion in Moro
What are your favourite features in the home?
My personal favourite feature would be the stone fireplace. All of the stone was quarried from the property itself and took 18 months to build by hand, I know the hard work and love that was spent on it and it has a very special place in my heart. Another favourite of mine are the steel-framed windows. These frame the valley and mountain views so perfectly and it's such a delight to sit with a cup of coffee and look out the windows to the mountain view with the morning sunrise.
Flocca Linen Flat Sheet in Bere, Crush Linen Throw in Brun, Flocca Linen Blanket in Bere
How did the surrounding landscape inspire the design at Coombs Hill Barn?
The views from the property are second to none. The green valley and mountain views can be seen from almost all rooms in the barn. When deciding on the design and colour palette of the property it was obvious to us that we did not want to compete with the view nor take anything away from it. This is another reason we chose neutral colours and furnishings. We do have a forest green tiled splashback in the kitchen which I love, this actually ties in perfectly with the surrounding greenery and is a nice colour touch to an otherwise very pared-back colour palette.

Coombs Hill Barn
Coombs Hill Barn
Our recent photoshoot took us to a striking 160-year-old barn imported from Indiana, USA, located in the Victorian High Country. With rustic grandeur and elegant classical features, this incredible property pairs history and craftsmanship with a fresh, contemporary sensibility, providing the perfect setting to showcase our luxurious pure European linen bedding collection.
The HMCo. team travelled two hours and 45 minutes northeast of Melbourne to Merrijig, where this stunning barn stands on a 100-acre property overlooking Mount Buller and the Delatite Valley. Discovered in the USA by the owners before being dismantled, shipped to Australia and meticulously rebuilt on-site in 2017, it has been transformed into a warm and inviting family home that is also offered as luxurious accommodation.
Hand-finished details and wooden elements sit alongside white-washed walls and polished concrete floors, imbuing a rustic-meets-refined aesthetic that beautifully complements our pure linen bedding. A 12-metre-high stone fireplace, laid by hand using sandstone and mudstone collected from the surrounding paddocks, lends a sense of provenance to the home, which has been furnished with natural materials including jute, linen and ceramics to create a space that is both elegant and welcoming.

Fresh mountain air and cool, crisp nights called for soft, textural bedding that can layered up for a maximalist look or pared down to a simple bedspread or flat sheet as the seasons change. The High Country landscape also informed our nature-inspired palette, with Mare, Argent, Roy and Fog echoing the blue tint of the mountain horizon, the shifting mood of the skies, and the fields of green, while Sable, Bere and Brun offer a warm, earthy combination.

With its triple-height structure and vaulted ceilings, exposed timber beams, and panoramic views through the classical steel windows, the barn's expansive, open layout is suitably furnished with king-size beds that presented the ideal opportunity to style our generously sized bedding, blankets and throws. Demonstrating its classic adaptability and sumptuous drape, our pure linen range looked right at home in this timeless setting.

Colour Therapy
Colour Therapy
Our surroundings can have a significant impact on how we feel, particularly the colours we use inside our homes, evoking feelings of calm, excitement and happiness if applied thoughtfully. While everyone experiences colour differently, understanding how certain hues affect our overall mood can be helpful when designing a bedscape that inspires relaxation.
Flocca Linen Sheets in Mare, Roy and Petra, Flocca Linen Duvet in Fonda, Flocca Linen Blanket in Fog
Blue is the colour most prevalent in the natural world, which is perhaps why we find it so soothing. Coastal-inspired hues such as oceanic Mare and deep sea blue Fonda are ideal for creating a tranquil sleep haven, with tonal layers of pale grey Fog and light, sandy neutrals combining to evoke moody skies and expansive horizons. These colours can also be used on walls and ceilings for an immersive sense of retreat.

Much like blue, shades of green can mirror the comforting qualities found in nature, so look to our lush Armee hue, evocative of rolling pastures, and the soft, silvery sage of Argent, for a natural refresh. How light or dark a colour appears, as well as its 'chroma' – how saturated or washed out it is – can also produce different reactions. For example, the emotions provoked by a deep, rich khaki might be quite different to the feeling we get from a light, whisper-soft green.

The colour of your lighting can similarly impact your mood, with red light believed to be the best option for relaxation as it boosts melatonin and therefore helps the brain reach a natural sleep state quicker. Blue or cool light, on the other hand, has the opposite effect and should be avoided in the evenings. if you don't have a red light, try using warm bulbs or even candlelight for a gentle ambience and an environment that's most conducive to rest.
