Imbuing a highly contemporary space with softness and warmth takes skill and creativity,  qualities innate to the interior design team at Flack Studio who have achieved an inviting balance of sleek modernism and colorful character in this stunning Toorak residence. The brief was for a considered family home that would get better with age, fit harmoniously into its surrounds – a neighborhood renowned for its architectural history – and maximize its aspect by creating a strong connection to the outdoors. Collaborating with architect Richard Blight of Blight, Blight and Blight, David Flack of Flack Studio took inspiration from the suburban landscape as well as the daily habits of the residents, a couple with three young adult children who enjoy cooking, reading and spending time together.

Designed to support the family’s lifestyle, the home’s seamless flow and voluminous proportions were carefully considered, the team utilizing a selection of materials including black steel, grey render and natural stone as well as timber joinery and aged brass fixtures that would continue to improve aesthetically over time. Color-wise, the objective was to offer a tonal palette throughout the building while harnessing bursts of color in the powder room and library.

In the centre of the home, a dark American oak staircase with an organic, fluid form creates a dramatic sculptural feature, introducing a natural warmth and texture to a cool white palette and travertine floor tiles. Tactile accents and vintage pieces add personalised touches, with a thoughtful curation of décor, art, furniture and lighting elevating each space with a sense of understated luxury that eliminates the need for fussy ornamentation and embellishments.

In the powder room, floor-to-ceiling green marble tiles and a custom marble basin create a striking scheme, with sophisticated aged-brass fixtures carrying through from the kitchen and dressing room. In the library, the colorful spines of hundreds of books enliven the American oak shelves, while large windows are strategically positioned to maximize natural light and views of the garden.
