One of the most widely recognised coastal style schemes is a quintessential Hamptons look, where colour is applied liberally and collectively alongside whites and neutrals, perhaps as a feature wall or layered in soft furnishings. A contemporary coastal style, on the other hand, uses colour minimally in a singular hue or two as a subtle accent.

Just as important as colour is a sense of balance. When styling a bed, for example, a Hamptons look features symmetry in its application of cushion placement – a standard pillow, European cushion and accent cushion on one side of the bed will be mirrored on the other. The same applies to a contemporary look, albeit more minimal, such as a stacked standard pillow offering both simplicity and balance.
