Exuding warmth and tactility, this spirited Gold Coast residence by Maher Design takes cues from Spanish minimalism and its vibrant beachside setting to dream up an inviting mix of retro playfulness and modern sophistication. Given the project's coastal location, the materials used were chosen for their durability as well as aesthetic value, with a restrained palette of timber, terracotta, ceramic, glass and stainless steel combining for a high-end yet hardwearing look that lends itself beautifully to our pure linen collection.

A reimagining of this 1980s beach house by Geraldine Maher saw the designer emphasising colour and materiality to bring about a refreshed energy, with considered elements that echo the surrounding landscape. This can be seen in the boys' bedroom, where layers of Fonda, Tempest and Oro inject personality and draw tones from the nearby ocean, grassy coastline and sand dunes. Steering clear of the classic, all-white beachside scheme, Geraldine's use of unexpected combinations offers visual interest and enlivens the space.

A coastal-inspired palette carries through to the master bedroom, where the gentle elegance of Ayrton and Petra set the scene for a tranquil seaside escape as timber touches enable a warm, earthy tactility. The desire for simplicity meant stripping back fussy finishes, while creating a strong connection to the beach and the outdoors has been achieved by opening out the interior spaces to allow for fluidity and natural light.

Geraldine took inspiration from the original terracotta roof tiles and introduced complementary floor tiles throughout the entire renovation, conveying a strong Spanish minimalism influence and a sense of calm and cohesion between each space. In the bathroom, the terracotta flooring is a warm and grounding contrast to the cooler tones of the walls and vanity, with our pure linen towels in Russo and Sable imbuing rich textural appeal and tonal sophistication.
