While interior trends come and go, the desire to create a warm and welcoming space to spend time with loved ones is a constant. Enter cottagecore, the design aesthetic that, while not exactly new, has seen a resurgence in recent years due to social media influencers' sepia-toned snaps coupled with Taylor Swift's Folklore album touting forest strolls, cosy cardigans and freshly baked scones. This classic look is all about comfort, slow living and simplicity, and has been widely embraced as we've been spending more time at home.

With a focus on softness, layering and well-worn pieces that tell a story, cottagecore is the antidote to sleek minimalist and fast homewares. Derived from a bucolic farmhouse aesthetic that has been around for centuries, this trend has evolved beyond the rustic style we are familiar with as designers push the boundaries with considered clashes of colour and patterns. The resulting look is romantic, modern and personal – and most importantly, lived in.

The cottagecore colour palette is nature-inspired, with earthy neutrals providing an adaptable backdrop for patterns – think florals and nature motifs – and vibrant accents. Layering is key, as is a sense of laidback ease, so allow your bedding and accessories to fall naturally for a look that is fuss-free and uncontrived. Pure linen provides the inviting tactility and relaxed elegance necessary to achieve this look, while understated hues ensure that your space is grounding and timeless.

Whether you wish to transport yourself to the verdant English countryside or a cabin in the woods each time you step through the front door or retain a more contemporary look at home, there are elements of cottagecore that will work to elevate any space, whether maximalist or pared-back. Handcrafted ceramics or a piece of antique furniture can imbue an artisan touch to a modern interior, while soft furnishings and subtle, ruffled details lend elegance and cosy textural appeal to the bedroom, bathroom, living areas and kitchen.
